Talk about the opening of your favourite book.
Favorite Book: Pride and Prejudice
Chapter 1
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
This opening is brilliant.
Let’s just begin by admitting this statement is true. Fathers are always looking for the best guy for their daughters and rarely hesitate to make suggestions. While they’ll never say they’re choosing based on wealth, they are instinctively looking for the person who will best be able to provide for the daughter….
This statement is amplified when you consider girls and their friends, instead of their families, planning who the new wealthy neighbor will marry. We all try to set up our friends every now and then. And we are so quick to plan the wedding and future lives with this man usually before the first date.
As far as Pride and Prejudice goes, I think this is one of the best lines in the book. It draws you in because “it is a truth universally acknowledged” and we know we all think the same way…
